R.I.P. Mr. Butch.
even when i was a beantown newbie, one of the things i always knew i'd miss the most about boston when i eventually left was mr. butch. he was the mascot of my allston neighbourhood, and was always there with a "well, helloooo, pretty lady" and a cup of miller high life in hand.
he has been a boston fixture forever, first frequenting kenmore sq., and then moving up to allston village when kenmore became too gentrified. he gave fabulous performances on street corners with his portable mic and electric guitar. his leather jacket bore the name of his enterprise, "the mr. butch show," in red, white, and blue.
i often saw him sitting outside the second-hand furniture stores, making use of the sofas, etc., that were placed on the sidewalks during good weather. i remember walking to the 66 bus stop last summer on my way to work and waving to mr. butch as he lounged in the sun on a futon, party cup filled with beer in hand. it was 10 a.m. : )
last night, he was involved in an accident on his scooter. his neck was broken, and he has passed away now.
R.I.P. Mr. Butch. Allston will never be the same.

For two years I lived on the corner of Chester and Brighton Ave and would see Mr. Butch every day. :(

Accidents seem to be so frequent in Allston- I got hit by a minivan on my bike once a few years ago. On Cambridge St near the Sports Depot! (Nothing major, the van merely "nicked me" and it wound up being a little comical since the van didn't even stop..) But anyway, there needs to be some sort of PSA about safety in Allston
